POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT
Not your ordinary behaviour therapy...
At Kind & Collaborative Empowerment, we believe Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) should be more than just “managing behaviours.” It’s about uncovering the why behind behaviours, creating compassionate strategies, and building a life where individuals don’t just cope — they thrive.
Our PBS practitioners are therapists, educators, and advocates who know that one-size-fits-all simply doesn’t work. We collaborate with families, schools, allied health professionals, and support workers to create plans that feel practical, inclusive, and aligned with each person’s goals.
Because real change doesn’t come from trying to “fix” someone — it comes from understanding them, working together, and putting the right supports in place so they can flourish.

What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that helps people understand and manage behaviours of concern in a safe, respectful, and practical way. Instead of focusing on “what’s wrong,”
PBS asks why a behaviour is happening and what needs aren’t being met. It’s not about punishment or control. It's about:
Understanding the person – their strengths, challenges, environment, and goals.
Identifying triggers – what situations or settings make behaviours more likely.
Creating proactive strategies – teaching new skills and adapting environments to reduce stress.
Building capacity for the whole team – families, schools, and support workers all play a role.
Focusing on quality of life – supporting people to not just cope, but thrive.
At its heart, PBS is collaborative. It’s about working with the individual and their supports to build strategies that feel practical, affirming, and sustainable.
What are 'Behaviours of Concern'?

Behaviours of concern are actions that pose a risk to the safety, wellbeing, or quality of life of the individual or those around them. They may include aggression, self-harm, property damage, withdrawal, or behaviours that limit participation in everyday activities.
How can Positive Behaviour Support help?
What triggers 'Behaviours of Concern'?
Triggers for behaviours of concern are events or situations that increase stress or overwhelm, such as sensory overload, unmet needs, communication difficulties, changes in routine, or social conflict. They act as signals that something isn’t right.
Positive Behaviour Support helps by identifying triggers for behaviours of concern, understanding why they occur, and creating practical, compassionate strategies that reduce stress, teach new skills, and improve quality of life for both the individual and their support network.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

We’re not just another provider — our difference is in how we connect, collaborate, and empower
We live it as well as practise it.
Over 50% of our practitioners are neurodivergent themselves. That means we don’t just bring professional expertise — we bring lived experience. We understand, first-hand, the challenges and the strengths that come with neurodivergence, and we use that insight to connect with participants and families on a deeper level.
We never stop learning.
Our team is committed to ongoing research and training, staying across the latest evidence-based, neuroaffirming approaches. We don’t recycle outdated strategies or force one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, we tailor interventions to meet each participant where they are.
We use proven, compassionate models.
Some of the frameworks we draw from include:
PANDA Model – for understanding and supporting Pathological Demand Avoidance.
Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) – problem-solving with participants, not for them.
PACE Model – building connection through Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy.
Attunement – staying responsive to a person’s emotional state and needs in the moment.
These approaches — and many more — help us design supports that are practical, respectful, and sustainable.
Because at the end of the day, PBS isn’t about “fixing” behaviours. It’s about empowering individuals to feel safe, understood, and supported while helping families and networks create environments where growth is possible.

Interim Behaviour Support Plans – immediate strategies to keep everyone safe and supported.
Safety Plans – tailored to reduce risk and keep the environment calm.
Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA) – uncovering the why behind behaviours.
Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans – detailed, long-term strategies with clear, measurable goals.
Individualised Support Plans – customised to each person’s unique needs.
Parent & Caregiver Training – because families and teams deserve strategies that work in everyday life.
Social Skills Training – practical tools for connection and confidence.
School-Based Interventions – support where children spend most of their day.
Collaboration with Supports – we bring the whole team together, from teachers to therapists.
NDIS Review & Funding Reports – advocacy to make sure supports are funded properly.
WHAT WE OFFER
Our Positive Behaviour Support is all about holistic, practical, and neuroaffirming strategies.
Here’s how we support you:

Initial Consultation
We begin by building a full picture of the participant and their environment—through meetings, observations, and collaboration with families and providers. This process respects each person’s unique strengths, history, and needs, ensuring all voices are heard from the start.
Interim Behaviour Support Plan
Together, we co-design an initial plan that centres the person’s strengths, preferences, and quality-of-life goals. We provide practical strategies to support immediate needs, always avoiding restrictive practices unless absolutely necessary—and only with informed consent and clear communication.
Functional Behaviour
Assessment
Using observations, interviews, and behaviour logs, we uncover the purpose or 'why' behind behaviours. This helps us tailor strategies that affirm the participant's needs and reduce distress, forming the foundation for long-term supports.
Comprehensive Behaviour support plan
This detailed plan sets measurable, realistic goals. It includes strategies that focus on building skills, celebrating strengths, and reducing barriers—with input from everyone involved in the participant’s care.
Implementation & review
We offer ongoing training and resources to make the plan work in real life—adjusting as needed to keep things relevant and effective. Before closure, we prepare a report that supports continued NDIS funding and celebrates progress made.
